“If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself, but to your estimate of it; and this you have the power to revoke at any moment.”    ~ Marcus Aurelius Antoninus

This quote rings no more true for me than right now.  I recently had an experience of failure that was self imposed by a measure that I set which was unrealistic.  Also, in hind site, I made a poor decision in terms of the use of my time.  These two combined to a “Royal Smack Down” of myself in my head.

When I say frustrated to tears…  I think you can get what I mean.

Now this doesn’t happen often but when it does, I DO have something I can fall back on and that is my martial arts training.  I have overcome some pretty big obstacles in my training to get to the level I am.  That perseverance serves me well in times like this.  (This is a shameless plug but I really don’t know what people do who have not trained and developed that mental resilience.)

Quotes like this also remind me that although my external environment has an impact on my internal environment… it is ultimately up to me how I handle my INTERNAL environment.  In essence the decisions I make and what I say.

For me, it doesn’t necessarily make it better…  but it does make it easier.  Plus, every time something like this happens, it is an opportunity for me to learn more about myself.  What could be better than self mastery?
