Rank Testing Requirements at Dojo Fairfield

Dojo Fairfield has a belt system which is very unique.  It is designed to allow students to learn and develop Martial Arts skills in a rewarding and motivating manner.  The system allows the student to develop speed, flexibility, balance, strength and confidence with each new belt.  Each new belt brings the student closer to their ultimate goal – Black Belt!

12-17 test 4Karate Students

The student begins with a White Belt.  At the end of each class, they receive a stripe.  After 16 stripes and two months of classes, the student is eligible to test.  Tests are held on the last Thursday of every month at 6pm.  Students progress in this manner, one belt at a time, until they reach blue belt.  Once they earn a blue belt, they need 24 classes and 3 months of training in order to be eligible to test for their next rank.  Once a student attains the rank of Bo-Black (half red, half black belt), they will receive at least 24 months of specialized training in order to prep them mentally and physically for their Black Belt test.  They no longer receive stripes after every class, and will instead receive one stripe per month, assuming they learn the appropriate techniques.

Our younger karate students have a modified version of our belt system.  This system awards new belts more frequently and allows the student to recognize and celebrate progress that is in line with their developmental stage.  Students age 4-5 will follow a similar process as outlined above, but will be eligible to test for their next rank after 8 classes or one month of training.  They will progress from White belt, to White/Yellow, White/Orange, and will then test for their Yellow belt.  Students will need about 2 months and 16 classes in order to proceed through each of their Yellow belts, which include: Yellow/Orange, Yellow/Purple, Yellow/Blue, Yellow/Green and Yellow/Brown.  Once a student either reaches the age of 6, or earns their Orange belt they will follow the same progression as the older karate students (outlined above).

1-28 test5Adult Kickboxing Students

The belts for our kickboxing program are extremely important for several reason.  First, they help the instructor know what level you are at in your training.  Second (and perhaps most importantly), the belts help you stay focused on your goal.  They are a constant reminder of where you are in the program and where you are headed.

Every day when you finish class, you place a stripe on the tip of your belt.  The number of stripes indicate the number of classes you have taken.  After 16 stripes and 2 consecutive months of training, you are eligible to test for your next rank!  Tests are held the last Thursday of each month at 7:00pm.  Students from White Belt to Blue Belt test after 16 classes and 2 months of training.  Between Blue Belt to Brown III Belt, students test after 24 classes and 3 months of training.  Once a student attains the rank of Bo-Black, they must fulfill certain requirements in order to qualify to test each month.  They no longer receive daily stripes, and instead will receive one stripe on the back of their belt following each test, assuming they demonstrate the appropriate technique.  After 12 stripes, and specialized training designed to both mentally and physically prepare the Bo-Black student, they are eligible to test for their Black Belt.
