Last night was our monthly test for karate and kickboxing students at our Fairfield Dojo, and they rocked it out!  Our students, parents, and supporters came out in the relentless heat and humidity in order to take part – and it was well worth it.  Congratulations to everyone who earned their newest rank!   We’ll see the rest of you testing next month!

Spotlight on A Thai Kickboxing Student – Mark A.

We may have grown to know each other on the mat, but how well do you really know the members of our awesome martial arts community?  We took the opportunity to sit down with one of our students – Mark A. – in order to gain some insight into his life both on and off the mat.

SMA: Are you originally from Fairfield?  If not, where did you grow up?
MA: I grew up in Woodbridge, CT

SMA: How long have you been training at Stryker Martial Arts?mark a
MA: I’ve been training for about 1.5 years

SMA: What is your current rank?
MA: I am a Green Stripe belt

SMA: What have you experienced as a benefit of training in our Black Belt Club?
MA: Many benefits of training.  I joined expressly to get into better shape.  Learning martial arts was secondary.  But, as I have continued with the training, I have found that learning a new skill-set, gaining net experience, is a tremendous bonus.

SMA: What does the term “martial arts” mean to you?
MA: “Martial Arts” is a way of life focusing on discipline, motivation, perseverance, and concentration.

SMA: What does your life consist of off the mat?
MA: I’m a trial lawyer.  I do personal injury litigation.  And I am a father to a 22 year old daughter, who is in college.  I reside in Fairfield CT.

SMA: How has your martial arts training served you off the mat?
MA: Aside from losing weight and getting into better shape – which alone has many benefits off the mat – the focus and discipline required in class leads to better focus and discipline generally.

SMA: What is your definition of  a Black Belt Attitude?
MA: Let nothing stand in your way.  Achieve goals and objectives.  Determination.

SMA: What’s your favorite food?
 MA: Italian

SMA: You’re stranded all alone on a remote tropical island.  What are three things that you would miss the most from your current life?
MA: My daughter, Italian food, and of course, Stryker Martial Arts

SMA: What’s your ‘Go To’ move?
MA: Right leg roundhouse.

SMA: What do you see yourself doing in five years?
MA: Pretty much the same as I am now.  Working.  Training.  Trying to better myself.

SMA: What song would you have as your theme song?
MA: Whole Lott’a Love – Led Zeppelin

SMA: Do you have any secret talents?
MA: I played D1 golf in college

SMA: Who do you admire the most and why?
MA: My dad.  Excellent role model.

SMA: If you had a time machine, where is the first place you would travel?
MA: Rome in the time of Jesus.  I enjoy history.

SMA: Where is the coolest place you’ve traveled to, and why was it so cool?
MA: Camping in the Canadian Rockies.  On top of the wold.  Enjoying the peace and serenity of nature.

SMA: What is your favorite movie?
MA: “Big” – Never grow up.  :)

Current Black Belt students are to report to the school at 12pm.  B0-Black Students who are testing for their first degree Black Belt must report to the school by 1pm sharp.
