Spotlight On Our Thai Kickboxing Student – Kelley M.

We may have grown to know each other on the mat, but how well do you really know the members of our awesome martial arts community?  We took the opportunity to sit down with one of our Black Belt students – Kelley M. – in order to gain some insight into her life both on and off the mat.

SMA: Are you originally from the Fairfield area?  If not, where did you grow up?
K.M.: Most of my youth I lived in Trumbull.  For my late teen years I lived in TX.  I moved back to CT in my 20’s and moved back to Trumbull to raise my kids.

SMA: How long have you been training at Stryker Martial Arts?
K.M.: I have been training at SMA for 6 years.

SMA: What is your current rank?
K.M.: Black Belt

SMA: What have you experienced as a benefit of training in our Black Belt Club?
K.M.: I have learned a lot about my body, where most of strength is, and how to use it.

SMA: What does the term “Martial Arts” mean to you?
K.M.: Martial Arts means discipline, to me.

SMA: What does your life consist of off the mat?
K.M.: First and foremost, I am a wife and mother of 2 children.  My less intense job is being a hairstylist.  I love days at the beach, hiking, and learning new things.

SMA: How has your martial arts training served you off the mat?
K.M.: It has taught me patience. I’ve learned to take a step back from situations and study them further before taking action.

SMA: What is your definition of a Black Belt Attitude?
K.M.: Have confidence in knowing that nothing is mastered.  You always have something more to learn.

SMA: What is your favorite food?
K.M.: Hands down, nachos!

SMA: You’re stranded all alone on a remote tropical island.  What are three things that you would miss the most from your current life?
K.M.: Things, right?… not people?  I would miss Iced coffee, my phone, and my electric toothbrush.

SMA: What is your “Go-To” move?
K.M.: Right knee, right elbow

SMA: What do you see yourself doing in five years?
K.M.: Traveling more.  There’s so many countries that I would love to see.

SMA: What song would you have as your theme song?
K.M.: Eye of the Tiger  by Survivor (Note from SMA: We LOVE Kelley’s theme song!)

SMA: Do you have any secret talents?
K.M.: The best I can come up with is that I can touch my tongue with my nose.  Sorry – that’s it!

SMA: Who do you admire the most, and why?
K.M.: My father.  He impacted so many people’s lives.  He never had an unkind work to say about anyone.

SMA: If you had a time machine, where is the first place you would travel?
K.M.: I would like to go back to my childhood so I could spend more time with my dad.  I would’ve liked to get to know him better as a human being, not just as a father.

SMA: Where is the coolest place you’ve traveled to, and why was it so cool?
K.M.: England.  I love the history and architecture.

SMA: What is your favorite movie?
K.M.: The Outsiders

It’s Labor Day Weekend – Closings and Revised Schedule

The kids are back in school, the weather forecast looks favorable, and hopefully there is a BBQ on your agenda for this long weekend!

That’s right, it’s Labor Day weekend, and the dojo will be closed on Saturday, and Monday – reopening on Tuesday September 3rd.

Beginning next week, we will have a slightly revised schedule for our adult Kickboxing and Thai Kickboxing students. We have added three additional kickboxing classes on Thursday at 7pm, Friday at 7pm and Saturday mornings at 8:30. In order to try out a kickboxing class, simply see a staff member for more information. Our normally scheduled Tap Tap class will move to 7:45pm on Thursdays.

We’re excited to expand the schedule for the kickboxing program, and look forward to bringing this energetic program to a wider audience.  See you on the mat!


 

September Referral Special!

It’s that time of year – time for our September Referral Special (and boy, is it a good one)!

During the month of September, if you refer a person to one of our programs (kickboxing, Thai kickboxing, and karate), and they sign up – you will receive the month of October for FREE.

That’s right … Everyone has a the opportunity to train for the month of October at no cost. So start telling your family, friends, neighbors, carpool buddies, colleagues, or simply shout it from the rooftops.
