Quote of the Week

“The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; the realist adjusts the sails.” -William Arthur Ward

Spotlight on Our Students – Kristin V.

We may have grown to know each other on the mat, but how well do you really know the members of our awesome community?  We took the opportunity to sit down with one of our students (and one of our AMAZING instructors) – Kristin V. – in order to gain some insight into her life both on and off the mat.

SMA: Are you originally from Fairfield?  If not, where did you grow up?
K.V.: I grew up in Rocky Hill, CT, which is right outside of Hartford.  I’m a Fairfield University grad, though.

SMA: How long have you been training at SMA?
K.V.: I’m coming up on 3 years.
SMA: What is your current rank?
K.V.: I’m a Bo-Black getting ready to test for my Black Belt this December!
SMA: What have you experienced as a benefit of training in our Black Belt Club?
K.V.: I think when I initially joined it, the increased class attendance offered was what got me looking at how to shape my life around my martial arts.  I got to be more committed to myself and my training and hold it as a priority in my life, and I think that’s one of the big things that has led to achieving my weight loss and other fitness goals.
SMA: What does the term ‘martial arts’ mean to you?
K.V.: It means learning how to be powerful in body, mind, and life.
SMA: What does your life consist of “off the mat”?
K.V.:My initial answer to this was “what life off the mat?  I work here!”  A more thoughtful answer, though, is that I enjoy running because it helps me clear my head.  I love finding moments to relax on the couch or outside in the shade with a book or my own writing.
SMA: How has your martial arts training served you off the mat?
K.V.:I continually learn to be more confident about who I am and what I have to offer the world.  I think for a long time I did “what was expected” rather than be who I really am, and in some unexplainable way, my training has allowed me to be more me.
SMA: What is your definition of a black belt attitude?
K.V.:”Get it done, and do it right.”
SMA: What’s your favorite food?
K.V.: My favorite food is homemade pasta with butter and parmesan cheese.  My grandfather taught me how to make it, and I get to think of him eery time that I make it or eat it.
SMA: You’re stranded all alone on a remote tropical island. What are three things that you would miss the most from your current life?
K.V.: I’d miss my dog, my brothers, and Fruit Punch Capri Suns.
SMA: What’s your go to move?
K.V.: I love a good left hook.  Participating in the Tap Tap class has led me to learn how to use a left leg front kick fairly well, to my surprise.
SMA: What do you see yourself doing in five years?
K.V.: I’d love to find more ways to work with women in a fitness-oriented way, and definitely through the martial arts.  I think really great things come from discovering how powerful a body can be.  I’d like to bring that to more women.  I’d also enjoy using my personal coaching certification.  Somehow, I’ll combine all of these and it will be awesome.
SMA: What song would you have as your theme song?
K.V.: Unbreakable by Fireflight.  It’s about doing things despite the fear.
SMA:  Do you have any secret talents?
K.V.: Usually when I’m asked this question, I answer with the fact that I do martial arts!  I guess that doesn’t count here.  I can make animated stick figure videos!  I used one to win a scholarship with a career coach last year.  It led to me taking some fairly big jumps.  You can check out the video here.
SMA: Who do you admire the most, and why?
K.V.: My cousin, Megan, rocks. She is a professor and researcher at Yale in programs designed to help women, plus she is a great mom, and on top of that she is incredibly active so in awesome shape. I don’t think she sleeps.
SMA: If you had a time machine, where is the first place would you travel?
K.V.:I would go back to the early 90’s when my grandparents still owned their cattle farm in upstate New York.  I loved it there and have many beautiful memories of it.  I would always wake up before everyone else in the house, so I could eat breakfast quickly and get outside to help the farm manager, or go play in the brook, or go roam through the barn and jump around in the hayloft.
SMA: Where is the coolest place you’ve traveled to, and why was it so cool?
K.V.: One of my best friends, who I have known since nursery school, is from Iceland.  I got to visit her a couple times.  I was amazed by how community oriented everything seemed and also how safe it is.  I also absolutely love the practice of having babies nap outside in their stroller on the deck.  Even in the winter!  They get all bundled up in double layers and a lambs wool sleeping bag, wear two winter hats and have a blanket over the stroller, but then they get to enjoy the crisp winter air.  I think everyone believes it helps keep the babies healthy.
SMA: What is your favorite movie?
K.V.: Legally Blonde (but only the first one!).  It always cheers me up.

THANKS Kristin, for sharing your answers with us!  Stay tuned — YOU may be our next Spotlight Student!
