Quote of the Week

“A man who views the world the same at fifty as he did at twenty, has wasted thirty years of his life.”

-Muhammad Ali

Black Belt is a White Belt who Never Quit!

We’d like to welcome Kery K. – our newest White Belt student!  The hardest step is often the one that gets you through the front door for your first class.  Be sure to show Kery what it means to be a part of our awesome SMA Community!

Spotlight on Our Students – Teri K.

We may have grown to know each other on the mat, but how well do you really know the members of our awesome community?  We took the opportunity to sit down with one of our students – Teri K. – in order to gain some insight into her life both on and off the mat.

SMA: Are you originally from Fairfield?  If not, where did you grow up?
T.K.: I grew up in Fairfield.  My family has been here in the Fairfield/Bridgeport area since 1850.  I lived in Orlando for 5 years for school & work but I missed being home, so I moved back in 2001.

SMA: How long have you been training at SMA?
T.K.: 5 years (with a few lapses).
SMA: What is your current rank?
T.K.: I’m a blue belt.
SMA: What have you experienced as a benefit of training in our Black Belt Club?
T.K.: Black Belt Club give me the chance to really process what we do in class in a smaller setting.
SMA: What does the term ‘martial arts’ mean to you?
T.K.: Martial arts to me is clarity (at least my attempt at it).  At SMA, I get to focus and the rest of the world disappears for an hour.  I don’t think there is any other place where I can do that.
SMA: What does your life consist of “off the mat”?
T.K.: Off the mat I spend most of my time at Yahoo! Studios in NYC where I’m a video editor.  When I’m not at work or commuting I’m usually spending time with my family or trying to get out to see live music.
SMA: How has your martial arts training served you off the mat?
T.K.: SMA training has boosted my confidence more than I thought possible.
SMA: What is your definition of a black belt attitude?
T.K.: Being honorable, humble, helpful & strong.
SMA: What’s your favorite food?
T.K.: Japanese.
SMA: You’re stranded all alone on a remote tropical island. What are three things that you would miss the most from your current life?
T.K.: My family/friends, my cat Hank (even though he’s very bad) & live music.
SMA: What’s your go to move?
T.K.: I’m fond of a solid right hook.
SMA: What do you see yourself doing in five years?
T.K.: I love working for Yahoo! so hopefully I’ll still be there editing.  I’m very lucky & grateful for what I have.
SMA: What song would you have as your theme song?
T.K.: Wonderful (the way I feel) by My Morning Jacket
SMA:  Do you have any secret talents?
T.K.: I do, It’s not 100% a secret but I have talent for shooting video at live concerts.  I’m very proud of my youtube page.  My most popular video has over 64,000 views.
SMA: Who do you admire the most, and why?
T.K.: I admire my sister.  She takes care of everyone, gets everything done and pretty much keeps our whole family on track.
SMA: If you had a time machine, where is the first place would you travel?
T.K.: I would go back to 1968 to see Johnny Cash live (Folsom Prison era)
SMA: Where is the coolest place you’ve traveled to, and why was it so cool?
T.K.: The coolest and my favorite place in the whole world is Fort Adams in Newport RI.  Every summer they hold the Newport Folk Festival there.  I’ve been going since 1993 and the friend I’ve made there over the years have become family.  There is nothing like it.
SMA: What is your favorite movie?
T.K.: V for Vendetta, The Incredibles & all 7 Season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer

THANKS Teri, for sharing your answers with us!  Stay tuned — YOU may be our next Spotlight Student!

Seven Hours of Sweat, Fatigue, and Technique – Black Belt Testing!

Our June Black Belt Test was held on Sunday June 23rd.  It was a loooooong test (just about 7 hours), and students fought through a Tap Tap class, forms, dynamic drills, and seemingly endless repetitions of Black Belt technique in order to showcase their training and prove that they were ready for their new rank.

Congratulations to Eric N. and Ria R. for successfully earning their first degree Black Belts, and Trinhan L. and Fred I. for successfully earning their second degree Black Belt!

Help Us Give Ms. Sarah our Best Wishes, As She Prepares to Welcome a Baby Ninja!

That’s right – Ms. Sarah still looks amazing in her uniform, as she is currently preparing to welcome her ‘baby ninja’ into the world at the end of August.

Mark your calendar, and join us at the dojo on Saturday July 20th in order to celebrate Sarah and her baby-on-the-way. We will end our kickboxing class a few minutes early to do something special for Sarah, and our kids’ karate classes will be full of games that day!  We will even find a way for parents to participate in the celebration.

You do not need to provide a gift, but should you choose to, Sarah is registered at Babies R Us.

We look forward to seeing you there!

We LOVE Student Referrals! Who Do YOU Want to See Training Beside You on the Mat?

Did you know that by sharing your martial arts experience with a friend or family member can actually benefit YOU? In fact, when you share your practice with someone you know, you not only have someone who can fully relate to your experience, but also someone who can help hold you accountable?

This quite often translates into BETTER RESULTS!

As a student, you’re also able to VIP a friend. Just pick up a card at your next class, or give us a call at (203) 319-9989.

So who are YOU inviting onto the mat?
