Let’s Welcome the Newest Students to Join the Community!

We have a couple new White belts who decided to train in the Martial Arts in at our Dojo!  We all remember how intimidating the first few classes can be, so be sure to give them a big ‘high five’ and introduce yourself at your next class!

Spotlight on A Kickboxing Student – Nikki C.

We may have grown to know each other on the mat, but how well do you really know the members of our awesome community?  We took the opportunity to sit down with one of our Thai Kickboxing students – Nikki C. – in order to gain some insight into her life both on and off the mat.

Nikki C.

SMA: Are you originally from Fairfield CT?  If not, where did you grow up?
N.C.: I was born in England and grew up in Westport, CT.

SMA: How long have you been training at SMA?N.C.: A little over 3 years

SMA: What is your current rank?
N.C.: Bo-Black

SMA: What does the term ‘Martial Arts’ mean to you?N.C.: Martial arts means commitment.

SMA: What does your life consist of off the mat?N.C.: I’m currently a full-time student.  I’m having an early midlife crisis – I quit my job last year and enrolled in an accelerated second bachelor’s degree program for nursing.  I graduate at the end of this summer!

SMA: How has your martial arts training at our Fairfield Dojo served you off the mat?N.C.: It’s changed my life in so many ways that it’s hard to choose one thing. I’d say the main thing is that it’s given me the courage to try other new things and has freed me from my fear of failure.

SMA: What is your definition of a Black Belt Attitude?
N.C.: To me, it means leading by example.  It means doing the right thing even when no one’s watching or when it’s not the easy thing to do.

SMA: What is your favorite food?
N.C.: Sakura hibachi

SMA: You’re stranded all alone on a remote tropical island.  What are three things that you would miss the most from your current life?N.C.: My dogs, my niece and nephew, and my iphone.

SMA: What’s your ‘go to’ move?
N.C.: Pivot elbow

SMA: What do you see yourself doing in five years?
N.C.: Hopefully I’ll be a pediatric or emergency room nurse with my black belt!

SMA: What song would you have as your theme song?
N.C.: I don’t know – something happy.  Something from Dave Matthews

SMA: Do you have any secret talents:
N.C.: Absolutely none (we at SMA would argue that this is not true)

SMA: Who do you admire the most, and why?
N.C.: I admire my mother the most.  She was kind to everyone and she was always laughing – she lived life to the fullest.

SMA: If you had a time machine, where is the first place you would travel?
N.C.: I would love to go to Kenya where my mom grew up and hang out with her in high school

SMA: Where is the coolest place you’ve traveled to, and why was it so cool?
N.C.: I loved Venice – the canals are beautiful and there is so much history.  Plus there are no cars which is incredibly different.

SMA: What is your favorite movie?
N.C.: I’m a sucker for old John Hughes movies, particularly The Breakfast Club.

BONUS RANDOM INFO: Dan and I went to high school together!

Thanks Nikki, for sharing your answers with us!  Stay tuned — YOU may be our next Spotlight Student!
