SMA’s Newest White BeltUnknown
Emmie M.
We look forward to working with you on the mat!

** Do you know anyone who could benefit from training in the martial arts?  Invite them to join our program!

“The training my son has received thus far has definitely given him a great deal of confidence.  His body has changed physically which mentally makes him feel better about himself.  He feels stronger now and he always looks forward to coming to class and doing the best he can.  Of course, he enjoys doing the workout with all his friends he has met at Stryker Martial Arts!  THANK YOU!” – Jayne Y.

Spotlight on Our Kickboxing Student – Ria R.

We may have grown to know each other on the mat, but how well do you really know the members of our awesome Fairfield, CT SMA community?  We took the opportunity to sit down with one of our Bo-Black students – Ria R. –  in order to gain some insight into her life both on and off the mat.

SMA: How long have you been training at Stryker Martial Arts?
Ria R.: Almost 4 years!

SMA: What have you experienced as a benefit of training in our Black Belt Club?
Ria R.: Knowledge.  Working on cool take-downs and working with amazing Black Belts.

SMA: What does the term “martial arts” mean to you?
Ria R.: A lifestyle.  Both mental and physical!

SMA: What does  your life consist of off the mat?
Ria R.: Boys, boys and more boys! (Note: Ria has 3 adorable sons that keep her on her toes!)

SMA: How has your martial arts training served you off the mat?
Ria R.: It has helped me deal better during stressful situations… I feel like i have more control during stressful situations.  Oh, and I can take on three little boys at once!

SMA: What is your definition of a Black Belt Attitude?
Ria R.: Doing what it takes to get the job done without complaint.

SMA: What is your favorite food?
Ria R.: Anything Asian

SMA: You’re stranded all alone on a remote tropical island.  What are three things that you would miss the most from your current life?
Ria R.: My husband, my kids, and my toothbrush

SMA: Again, you’re all alone on the same island, when you find yourself attacked by an unruly crab.  What’s your go-to move?
Ria R.: Knee up, foot down, and squash!

SMA: Do you have any secret talents?
Ria R.: I’m an excellent baker

SMA: Who do you admire the most, and why?
Ria R.: Rose Kennedy.  In the face of such horrific tragedy she stood fast to her beliefs – both spiritually and personally.

SMA: If you had a time machine, where is the first place you would travel?
Ria R.: I’ve always been fascinated by Native Americans and I think it would be cool to spend time with a tribe to experience their culture.

THANK YOU Ria, for taking the time to share your answers with us!  Stay tuned – YOU may be our next Spotlight Student!

Leadership Team Training – Friday Nights at 6:45pm

leadership team

  • Do you want to take a more active role in our SMA community?
  • Are you interested in engaging in meaningful, transformational conversations which will benefit your life beyond the training floor?
  • Are you eager to learn extra martial arts techniques that Master Dan has accumulated through his years of training?

If you answered “Yes” to ANY of the questions above, then you belong on our Leadership Team!

The Leadership Team meets every Friday at 6:45pm in order to develop skills to help you take charge of any audience, discuss (and sometimes debate!) interesting topics, and learn fun new techniques that will never be demonstrated in class.  The class is 45 minutes long, and is open to all students who are Bo-Black belt and up, and over the age of 17.

If you’re interested in participating, and are at least 17 years old and a Bo-Black belt, then join us this Friday!  If you aren’t yet a B0-Black Belt but are interested in participating in this class, simply send Kailen an email in order to discuss it further.

IMPORTANT: June Black Belt Test Change of Date and Pre-Test!

The date for our June Black Belt test has moved to Sunday June 23rd.

black belt test June 2012

If you are a current Bo-Black student, and anticipate testing for your Black Belt in June, you MUST report to our Black Belt Pre-Test, which will be held on Friday May 3rd at 6pm.  During this Pre-Test, you will demonstrate your techniques on the current Black Belt students, who will then determine whether or not you are ready to participate in the June test.

In the past, Master Dan – in his role as Chief Instructor – held the sole responsibility for determining a student’s readiness.  However, since we recognize that there may be a conflict of interest between his roles as Chief Instructor and Business Owner, we are now organizing a panel of Black Belt students to assess the candidates.

More information regarding the Pre-Test procedures can be found here.

If You Want the Best, Train With the Best at our Fairfield, CT Dojo!

Martial Arts training is NOT about punching and kicking. It is about growing and developing in all facets of life. It’s about working at 100% of your capacity, and challenging your thresholds.

Above all, martial arts is experiential, and can best be understood by participating in a class.
