Star Students for January!
This month marks the beginning of Dojo Fairfield’s Star Student recognition, where we award 1 karate student and 1 kickboxing student each month, who best represents our Black Belt Principles: Respect, Self-Control, Self-Discipline, Commitment, and Perseverance.
Karate Star Student for January – Annabella S.
She has been training with us since 2013, and has been a committed student from her very first day. You may recognize her from the front row of most karate classes, where she consistently demonstrates a Black Belt Attitude by representing her rank. We are so proud of her accomplishments on the mat.
Off the mat, Annabella’s parents indicate that Self-discipline, Commitment and Perseverance are by far the most dominant aspects she has portrayed at home since starting Dojo Fairfield. She has developed her own routine to accomplish her school work that needs to be done to allow free time for being a kid. Her commitment to karate, studies, and other activities has never faded but grown stronger. Her perseverance is evident in always trying harder and getting up and being better each time.
Kickboxing Star Student for January – Mimi F.
Mimi has been training with us since 2012 — and while she took a bit of break to train elsewhere for a short time — she is back with Dojo Fairfield and has never been more committed!
On the mat Mimi is a Bo-Black Student (working with a Black Belt attitude), who is training hard to absorb all of the required Black Belt Techniques. Mimi is a well-respected member of our adult community. Her supportive nature coupled with her can-do attitude truly helps to inspire those around her. We are proud of your hard work Mimi, and look forward to watching you earn your Black Belt!
Welcome to Our New Students!
We love taking time to celebrate our newest students! Be sure to give these students a high five the next time you see them on the mat.
“I have learned a lot about my body; where most of my strength is, and how to use it. It has taught me patience. I’ve learned to take a step back from situations and study them further before taking action.”
– Kelley M. – Trumbull, CT

We’re hosting a FREE event this Sunday (January 31st) from 10 – 11:30am … Cage Your Appetite! Join us for a 30 minute High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) Cage Fitness class, run by our own Lynn Martone – followed by a 60 minute discussion on nutrition with Jenn Spitzer, R.D.
Bring your friends, enthusiasm (and a bottle of water and towel), as well as your questions for Jenn – and we look forward to seeing you on the mat!
Karate Fundamental Class Info for February
During the month of February, our students will be working on more traditional martial arts – with the introduction of blocking and striking sets from a horse-stance.
Everything that they will do (in the martial arts) stems from these skills — but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they come naturally. Standing in a horse-stance in not innate. And learning to block and strike in a specific pattern is not something that your child can refer to on the playground with their friends. Some kids are able to quickly pick up this curriculum, while others require a little more time — and that’s ok! If your child is experiencing frustration, the best thing you can do is offer them a ‘high five’ and congratulate them on doing their best. They will eventually get it, (and perhaps even love it!)– we promise!
Karate Black Belt Club Info for February!
As you’re likely aware, we are re-starting our Merit Badge System for karate students in our Black Belt Club Program. In the past, this was a successful way to keep our students engaged, and eager to push past self-imposed boundaries to set goals. We are excited to bring this curriculum back into our program, as our badges not only challenge our student’s physical potential, but also their cognitive ability!
Please be aware, that we are starting off with a blank slate – so any badges that were previously earned, will remain on the student’s old uniform. Everyone is starting off fresh with our revised system.
We are awaiting our order for Black Belt Club Badges (photo to the left), and anticipate delivery within the next few weeks. All instructions on where to sew badges are included on our Merit Badge page.
Congratulations to all of our Black Belt Club karate students who had the opportunity to earn their Belt Tying badge this month. The badge for February will be for Blocking Set.
Our BBC students have been diligently working on their first form: 1 pinan. During the month of February, we will continue to hone their skill and technique on this form.
Beginning in March, we will be introducing escrima sticks! Mr. Oscar is very excited to work with the kids, as this is one of his favorite weapons to both teach and use. Stay tuned for information during the month of February on how to order your sticks, so your child is ready to go in March!
